Did the U.S. Hack the French Government?

French magazine L’Express reports that the U.S. government hacked into the computer systems of former French president Nicolas Sarkozy during the French presidential election in May. The report alleges that the attack came via Facebook, when an agent “friended” someone working at the presidential palace, known as l’Elysée. The employee was then invited to view a link on l’Elysée’s intranet. In order to view the page, the staff member was prompted for a user name and password. The website, however, was a replica, designed to give the attacker access to the highest levels of French government and enabling the installation of spy software. The U.S. embassy in Paris categorically refuted the allegations, stating that, “France is one of our best allies.”
